Orange sweet potatoes are an easy, lightened-up way to make mashed sweet potatoes! The citrus flavors are fantastic; I love that combo of orange and warm spices during the holidays.
I served this as a side dish with Orange Baked Haddock, which also tastes like Christmas to me. I also served it as a side with our official Christmas Dinner this year!
Orange Sweet Potatoes

Ingredients
- 2 large sweet potatoes (or 3 medium-sized ones)
- 2 teaspoon orange zest (about 1 orange worth)
- ½ cup orange juice (about 1 orange worth)
- 2 tablespoon packed brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into cubes.
- Put the potatoes in a pot and cover with water. Bring the pot to a boil over high heat.
- Continue to boil the potatoes for 15 to 20 minutes, until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork.
- While the potatoes are cooking, zest and juice 1 orange.
- When the potatoes are done cooking, drain the water out of the pot.
- Add the orange zest, orange juice, brown sugar and cinnamon to the pot along with the cooked sweet potatoes.
- Mash it all up with a potato masher.
